Law of Inefficiency

A conceptual principle — not a formal scientific law.

“Any inefficiency that leads to a lower total inefficiency is not an inefficiency.” Law of Inefficiency

This statement reflects a systems-thinking idea: what appears inefficient at a small or local level may actually improve overall efficiency when the whole system is considered. In real-world systems, such as traffic control, backup systems, or quality checks, small “inefficiencies” can prevent larger failures or losses. Therefore, efficiency should be judged based on total outcome, not just individual steps.
